World’s Tallest Dog Stands Tall With Three Legs
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - May 14, 2009 – Gibson, the Guinness World Record’s World’s Tallest Dog, recently had his front right leg amputated due to complications from bone cancer, which was found in the beloved dog’s paw a few weeks ago. The surgery was performed to prevent the cancer from further spreading.
The bone cancer was detected only in the front right paw, but the operation was performed to prevent the cancer from spreading throughout his body. The surgery gives Gibson a 95.5 percent greater chance of surviving and hasn’t affected his height, which has catapulted him to world-wide fame. He will have follow up chemotherapy treatments in the upcoming weeks.
Gibson is a certified therapy dog and does work with special needs training. He has worked with cancer patients, veterans and amputees. Standing at 42.2 inches tall, Gibson is a Harlequin Great Dane and has held the Guinness World Records’ Tallest Dog title for four years. He has made appearances on nationally televised shows, such as the “Oprah Winfrey Show” and “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”
Gibson will continue to hold his title as the World’s Tallest Dog and be the official spokesdog for K9Grass®, ForeverLawn Inc.’s line of artificial turf designed for dogs.
ForeverLawn has set up a donation fund to help pay for Gibson’s mounting medical expenses. Gibson fans can donate at www.k9grass.com/gibson.
“Gibson is a loving, gentle dog who provides joy to those who meet him. The loss of his leg will not slow him down. His ability to uphold his world title will continue to put smiles on people’s faces and uplift the spirit of those who are survivors of bone cancer,” said Sandy Hall, Gibson’s owner.
